Inside MusiCast 'Pick Of The Day': "Chasing Gold", by Chelsea Wilson
IMC Pick of the Day: "Chasing Gold", by Chelsea Wilson. Reviewed by Eddy Cabello.
Chelsea Wilson is a Melbourne based vocalist and she's hot. Her new album pushes all the right buttons – jazz, epic pop, funk, and even some disco. Did I say disco? Yes, but it's not offensive disco. This album is more than meets the ears. It also features lots of lush string arrangements that are perfect for the sound that "Chasing Gold" delivers.
It was produced by ARIA nominated composer/bassist Ross McHenry and Wilson. They did a fine job in engineering a variety of musical approaches on this album.
On "Chasing Gold", Wilson gives us ten tracks that will keep you grooving. After the initial "introduction", "Real Love" unveils Wilson's very competent vocals. Her voice is mid-soprano-lead...so we can't really know her vocal range. It's up there, for sure. She keeps it simple, singable and never over-sung. Too many singers attempt vocal acrobatics that sound so "cliché". Chelsea nails every vocal and molds it to her liking.
Let me bring up the strings once more, because they really weave this album together. They were arranged by Ross Irwin and Andy Boyle and they sound phenomenal.
I love that most of the songs log in at 4:00 - 6:00 minutes in length. This is a brave move to ensure that the listener has time to "feel" the music and old-school vibe. The album works and it's worth the listen.
Congratulations, Chelsea on a wonderful project.
