“ONDA NOVA” by Lucas Arruda Chosen by IMC Co-host Eddy Cabello
Lucas Arruda is one of the hottest young artists and composers from Brazil. He’s a young version or our good friend and past IMC guest Ed Motta. This young musician has produced nothing but magic since his first two albums on Favorite Records.
On this 2019 release, “ONDA NOVA”, Arruda sings in Portuguese and in English, but you don't need to understand any to enjoy the music because he is fluent in both languages – musically and linguistically. His sound is filled with rich fusion styles that are mixed with influences of Latin music, Jazz, Soul, Pop, and Funk.
Arruda’s is clearly committed to the vintage sounds of the 70’s, providing us with plenty of Rhodes to go around for everyone. He douses us all with a ton of AOR and West Coast jazz-rock flavor as you drive west on Sunset to the coast.
On "ONDA NOVA", Arruda wrote, composed and arranged all by himself. This is quite impressive. You can hear the final product, which is streaming currently on all online channels. However, Arruda teams up on a few tracks with his brother Thiago, who recently joined Ed Motta’s live band, and also good friend and musical partner Fabricio di Monaco. In the end, “ONDA NOVA” is a silky-grooved album with something for everyone.
This project is tied at the hip to his previous album “SOLAR”, mixing the Brazilian styles together with providing some blue-eyed soul and pop as ingredients. This is a true gem that you might miss, simply due to it being a Brazilian release. But don’t be dismayed, I’m throwing it to you so that you can dive in and enjoy the “language of great music”…no matter the language, if you know what I mean.
Lucas Arruda put it like this:
“In this record I really wanted to honor Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti. They are the main influence on this record. We recorded the basic tracks for the album in the same studio that Lincoln Olivetti did his last works. So, this was very important to capture the true essence of Brazilian Funk/AOR tradition. Hope you guys enjoy it!”
And I hope you enjoy this gem too.
